February 2022

Dear ANA members:

Greetings, and happy (almost) spring to you all! This month, we are excited to continue to share more virtual education opportunities with you, alongside some new initiatives that will allow us to feature more member voices in future podcasts and newsletters.

Educational Opportunities

To access the latest entry in the joint NINDS-ANA mentorship webinar series titled “Creating a successful research program: Combining great mentorship with compelling science and building a diverse and inclusive research environment,” I encourage you to visit the ANA On Demand Education Center (OnDEC). I was pleased to have the opportunity to be the speaker for this event and to help forward the ANA’s goal of developing an inclusive environment. As always, you can claim CME credits for viewing this series and the other on-demand content available for members.

Also, we would like to encourage you to submit podcast proposals and topic ideas to the Education Innovation Subcommittee. The submission form is available online, and if your podcast is selected, the ANA will assist you in producing it. In addition, you can of course always listen to past episodes of the ANA Investigates podcast online.

Finally, another exciting opportunity that some of you may need to know about is World Coma Day, an online event that is sponsored in part by the ANA. Taking place on March 22, this 24-hour global event will feature science talks, educational sessions, and even “shout out” videos. You can learn more and submit your own video at the Curing Coma website, and you can register for this free event here.

Special Interest Groups Update

As we continue to hone our organizational structures to best serve our membership, we have undertaken a restructuring of our special interest groups (SIGs). Our new cross-cutting SIG categories are as follows:

◦ Health Services and Health Equity Research

◦ Neurogenetics and Gene Therapy

◦ Neuroinflammation and Neuroinfection

◦ Neurorecovery and Neuroplasticity

◦ Neurodegeneration and Cell Death

◦ Neurodevelopment

We will also continue to host many of our traditional SIGs, including Cerebrovascular Disease, ANA-AHS Headache, MS and Autoimmune Neurology, Behavioral Neurology and Dementia, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Neuro-oncology, Neurocritical Care and Traumatic Brain Injury, Neuromuscular Disease, Sleep Disorders and Circadian Rhythms, Global Neurology, and Neuro-ophthalmology and Neurovestibular Disease.

Further Participation with ANA

Please note that an informational PowerPoint presentation created to summarize the offerings of the ANA to your faculty and residents is available in the newsletter and attached here for you to view and download. Please feel free to share the information in the presentation with your colleagues. As the ANA redefines itself, it’s important to get the word out about our many established and new professional development and educational offerings intended to reach an increasingly wide audience!

I would like to again remind you of our next Annual Meeting, which will take place in Chicago, Illinois, October 22–25, 2022. We have begun accepting abstract submissions at 2022.myana.org, and the deadline to submit is April 19.

Finally, with the ANA’s new Governance Council on board, we are assessing our committee and membership needs, and we would like to open up a virtual suggestion box. Please submit your questions and suggestions as to how we can continue to define and differentiate the ANA, as well as your thoughts on what the ANA can do for you. We look forward to hearing from you!
